Kala namak is a kiln-fired rock salt used in South Asia with a sulphurous, pungent smell. It is also known as “Himalayan black salt”, Sulemani namak, bire noon, bit lobon, kala loon, or pada loon, and is manufactured from the salts mined in the regions surrounding the Himalayas.
This is a very special edible salt product that has a unique taste of salt.
Inside, there is an abundance of minerals and iron from local herbs that grow around the region where the rock salt mines are located. The color of this salt is not really black as the name suggests, it has a deep purple color. Black salt is a top priority for vegetarians and is mostly used in salads and fruit dressings. Many people believe that the taste of black salt is similar to the taste of hard boiled eggs. Coarse black salt crystals can also be poured into a simple table salt grinder and grinded directly on the dishes for a fresh taste.
